Primer On Indian Casinos In California
There are 58 Indian casinos in California, operated by 57 different Native American tribes. Last year, Indian gaming across the United States by 233 tribes accrued total revenues worth $26.5 billion. Suffice it to say that this is big business.
But it wasn't big business a couple of decades ago. The tribes started offering games in the 80s and when the state clamped down, the tribes sued California. In a landmark judgment in 1987 (California vs Cabazon) the tribes won the right to run their casinos without state interference.
Just one year later, Congress passed the IGRA in 1988. The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act forced the tribes to agree to have their casinos subject to regulation and state rules about what kind of games would be allowed. But the tribes still take home all the money.
As for the Indian casinos in California, they're spread pretty evenly across Northern California and SoCal, with the remaining dotted around Central CA. These 58 casinos put together have 63,835 slot machines and more are in the pipeline. As of now, 10 more casinos are slated to add to the existing lot of 58.
As far as cities are concerned, San Diego is the Vegas of Indian gaming. There are 12 Indian casinos spread around San Diego county, including Valley Center's Harrah's Rincon Casino, Alpine's Viejas Casino and Pauma Valley's La Jolla Trading Post. If that's not enough, more tribes are getting ready to open even more casinos in San Diego.
Their rules regarding admission are slightly ambiguous. Since most of these casinos serve alcohol, the minimum age to play is usually 21. But they do allow minors into the premises, considering the casinos are also tourist attractions. Many times visiting families with children will want to visit a casino, and they're all allowed in.
